A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WEST
COVINA, CALIFORNIA, APPROVING NEW JOB CLASSIFICATION
SPECIFICATION FLEET SERVICES COORDINATOR
WHEREAS, the City Council has reviewed and approved the following job
Classification Specification: Fleet Services Coordinator
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WEST COVINA,
CALIFORNIA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The attached job Classification Specification (Exhibit 1) shall be formally
adopted.
SECTION 2. Section 1 of this Resolution shall be effective upon adoption by the City
Council of the City of West Covina.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution.

FLEET SERVICES COORDINATOR

JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, the Fleet Services Coordinator
assigns, evaluates, inspects and approves the work of contractors involved with the maintenance
of City vehicles, equipment, and machinery to ensure that the work is conducted thoroughly,
completed in a timely fashion, and meets acceptable standards. Assesses fleet maintenance needs,
prioritizes repairs, coordinates repairs with outside vendors, compiles and assesses repair
estimates, assigns and supervises repair work, reports work statuses, and approves repair work and
payments; helps develop and implement a comprehensive fleet and equipment maintenance
schedule, ensures the City's maintenance schedules are properly updated and followed, and
performs related mechanical work, inspections, and assessments as needed.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a single position class responsible for the daily operation of the City's Fleet and Equipment
Maintenance Services. Incumbents in this class report directly to the Public Works Superintendent
and/or a designated supervisor and perform administrative and technical tasks related to
fleet/equipment maintenance in accordance with established procedures and requirements.
Incumbents are expected to perform duties autonomously and with sufficient knowledge of
departmental procedures and requirements. Employees in this class have extensive contact with
contractors, vendors, general public, and City personnel and must ably answer technical questions,
procedural questions, provide reliable information, and respond effectively to all inquiries related
to fleet maintenance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Under general supervision and with minimal assistance, incumbents in this class must ably perform
the following functions:
1. Assess fleet and equipment maintenance needs, determine types of maintenance and repairs
to be completed, prioritize repair work, compile and review repair estimates, and assign
repair work to appropriate contractors.
2. Effectively coordinate, oversee, monitor, inspect, and approve the work of outside
contractors responsible for the maintenance of City vehicles, equipment, and machinery;
make recommendations to the Public Works Superintendent as appropriate.
3. Respond to, investigate, diagnose and resolve staff inquiries and requests related to vehicle
maintenance and repairs; recommend action pertaining to requests.

a computer and use a variety of computer software necessary for the effective completion of duties;
(n) read and understand manuals, directions, and bulletins related to duties; (o) keep accurate,
decipherable, and logically organized files and records; (p) analyze data and draw logical
conclusions; (q) effectively perform related administrative and technical work; (r) work
independently with minimal supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and Education
Three years of increasingly responsible experience in vehicle maintenance and repair. Two years
of experience as a journey level mechanic including diagnosis and repair of gasoline and diesel
automobiles, light and heavy equipment. Knowledge and experience in the repair of fire engines,
trucks and related specialized vehicles. Working knowledge of tests and procedures established
by the National Board of Fire Underwriters in the inspection and maintenance of fire apparatus.
Certifications
California Fire Mechanic Level 11 Certification is required.
Licenses
A valid Class A and Class C California Driver's License, with a satisfactory driving record is
required.
Physical Requirements
This position also requires extensive and repetitive physical activity involving the feet, legs, torso,
arms, wrists, and hands. Repetitive activities include standing, walking, sitting, writing and using
a mouse and computer keyboard. Position also requires physical abilities associated with the
ability to read, write and communicate in a work environment. Must be able to perform heavy
tasks related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment which includes lifting of
objects weighing more than 50 pounds. Must be able to tolerate regular exposure to grease,
machinery, and engine exhaust. Physical demands also require ability to regular bend, stoop,
conduct work overhead, and climb apparatuses.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Working Conditions
Office and field environment; sustained posture in a seated position at a desk or computer for
prolonged periods of time; travel from site to site; exposure to dust, noise and traffic; work in
inclement weather conditions; work on elevated levels or ladders; work on rough terrain and
muddy conditions. When working job sites, will have to bend, stoop, squat, twist, stand, and walk
for long periods of time. Operate motorized vehicles and equipment.
