RESOLUTION NO. 5818
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WEST
COVINA, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING THE CLASS SPECIFICATIONS
FOR THE CLASS OF FIREFIGHTER.
The City Council of the City of West Covina does resolve as follows:
SECTION 1. Pursuant to the recommendation of the Personnel Board,
the class specifications for the class of Firefighter are hereby repealed, and
new class specifications for the class of Firefighter, at Salary Range F-la,
as attached hereto, marked Exhibit A, and by this reference incorporated herein,
are hereby adopted.

JOB SUMMARY
CLASS SPECIFICATION
NOVEMBER 1978
SALARY RANGE F-la
Under supervision - responds to fire alarms, rescue, and other emergency calls;
protects life and property endangered by fire or other hazards; participates in
regular fire prevention inspections; participates in regular training, drill,
and study activities; assists in maintenance of stations and equipment; and does
related work as required.
Representative Duties
Responds to alarms; lays hose; fights fires under departmental procedures and as
directed; ventilates buildings and directs streams of water; cleans up and does
salvage work after fires; rescues endangered persons; administers first aid;
operates and maintains fire trucks, rescue units, and other apparatus and equip-
ment; operates resuscitators; serves as dispatcher; assists in maintenance and
repairs to fire department apparatus; inspects commercial and residential struc-
tures to insure compliance with federal, state, and local fire prevention laws
and regulations; maintains fire station and grounds; attends drills and classes;
studies technical periodicals and publications; studies local conditions, loca-
tions and regulations; may act in place of engineer on assigned shift.
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent, and 30 semester units of college credits
from an accredited school.
Firefighter
To qualify for the position of firefighter, no experience as a fire-
fighter is necessary; after appointment, an employee should be
willing to attend college level classes in Fire Science on his own
time.
Certified Firefighter
To be eligible for the position of Certified Firefighter the individual
must be certified as a Firefighter I by the California State Board of
Fire Services.
Experienced Firefighter
To be eligible for the position of Experienced Firefighter the indivi-
dual must have successfully completed two years in a paid government
fire department (city -county -special fire district) located in California.
Knowledge and Abilities
Good knowledge of arithmetic; knowledge of principles of mechanics, elementary
chemistry and elementary physics.
Ability: to read and understand technical materials relating to fire fighting,
prevention and departmental regulations; to apply elementary principles of chem-
istry and physics to fire fighting problems; to understand and follow written
and oral directions under stress and pressure; to work effectively under emergency
conditions, and to use sound judgement under hazardous circumstances; to work in
a team, and independently; to maintain cooperative working relations; to deal
effectively and courteously with the public; physical endurance and agility; to
write simple reports.

Age:, Minimum 21 years
Weight: In proportion to height
Vision: 20/20 to 20/30 in either eye, uncorrected and free from color blindness
Hearing: Normal, uncorrected
Applicants must pass medical and psychological examinations (at City expense)
prior to appointment.
Licenses
A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Must qualify for restricted Radio -Telephone Operator's Permit -.3rd class.
