Resolution - 5029RESOLUTION NO. 5029 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WEST COVINA REQUESTING THAT THE CALIFORNIA STATE LEGISLATURE REOPEN THE PERIOD WITHIN WHICH LOCAL AGENCIES MAY ELECT TO INCLUDE • IDENTIFICATION AND COMMUNICATION EMPLOYEES IN THE SAFETY MEMBER CLASSIFICATION OF THE PUBLIC EMPLOYEES RETIREMENT SYSTEM. WHEREAS, Senate Bill Number 37 adopted in the 1973-74 session of the Legislature amended Government Code Section 20020 to permit a local agency to elect to include as "local policeman" all persons who were employed to perform identification or communication duties on August 4, 1972, and who elect within 90 days after July 1, 1973 to be local safety members; and WHEREAS, Senate Bill Number 37 was adopted to avoid discrimination against female persons employed in police departments to perform identification or communications duties; and WHEREAS, the purpose of Senate Bill 37 was not achieved because female persons employed by local agencies to perform identification or communications duties in police departments did not receive timely information on the provisions of the Act; NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of West Covina does resolve as follows: SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of West Covina strongly urges the California State Legislature to once again make the option available to local agencies to elect to include those persons employed by local agencies to perform identification or communications duties in police departments on August 4, 1972, in the Safety Member Classification of the Public Employees Retirement System. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution and transmit copies thereof to the Senators and Assemblymen representing the City of West Covina.
