ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING
OF THE WEST COVINA CITY COUNCIL
WITH THE
W.C.U.S.D BOARD OF EDUCATION
May 22, 1990
The adjourned regular meeting of the West Covina City Council was called to order
at 6:45 pm by Mayor Tarozzi at Edgewood Middle School, 1625 W. Durness, West Covina.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Board of Education President Martinez.
ROLL CALL Mayor Tarozzi, Mayor Pro Tem McFadden, Councilmembers
Herfert, Jennings, Manners
Others Present: Fast, Eliot, Miller, Thomas, Leavitt, Wylie, Berry, the
Board of Education and administrative staff of W.C.U.S.D.
COMMUNITY CARE CENTERS Community Services Director Miller and Commander Leavitt
commenced a discussion regarding a rather new situation
involving group homes wherein juvenile status offenders
live while attending schools throughout West Covina. These
are adolescents who have behavior problems but are not
participating in criminal activities.
Both the Board of Education,and the City Council con-
curred on the need for more information regarding State
regulations and the desire to/work together on common
issues arising from these homes, staff was directed to
proceed with researching the community care center issue.
RECYCLING PROGRAM Eig_ht.h graders from a Saturday class entitled "Social Issues
in a Changing World" presented a recycling program they
designed and wished to implement at Edgewood Middle School.
Both legislative bodies noted their support of environ-
mental issues, and recycling in particular, and commended
the students for their efforts and enthusiasm. Approval
was granted by the Board of Education to proceed after dis-
cussing their program with the Principal of Edgewood Middle
School.
The City Council stated their support and Mayor Tarozzi
promised recycling bins for the program and noted their
request for a vehicle.and other materials necessary to pro-
mote the school project.
The class instructor, Dwight Ek,'will work with Community
Services Director Mike Miller.

carried to adjourn the meeting at 8:05 pm.1
