Resolution - 6434RESOLUTION N0. 6434 • • A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WEST COVINA, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING THE CLASS SPECIFICATION FOR FIREFIGHTER. The City Council of the City of West Covina does hereby resolve as follows: SECTION 1. Pursuant to the recommendation of the Per- sonnel Commission of the City of West Covina, the class specification for Firefighter is hereby amended by: a. Changing the education requirement from high school graduation and 30 college units to high school graduation or G.E.D. Certificate; and b. Reducing the minimum age requirement from 21 years to 18 years; and C. Modifying the vision requirement from 20/20 - 20/30 uncorrected to 20/70 uncorrected; correctable to 20/30; and d. Deleting the six month of paid firefighting experience from the requirements for the Certified Firefighter Program. as incorporated in Exhibit A attached hereto. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution. City Attorney s 11CITY OF WEST COVINA CLASS SPECIFICATION Revised AUGUST 1981 FIREFIGHTER JOB SUMMARY Under supervision - responds to fire alarms, rescue, and other emer- • gency calls; protects life and property endangered by fire or other hazards; participates in regular fire prevention inspections; parti- cipates in regular training, drill, and study activities; assists in maintenance of stations and equipment; and does related work as required. Representative Duties Responds to alarms; lays hose; fights fires under departmental proce- dures and as directed; ventilates buildings and directs streams of water; cleans up and.does salvage work after fires; rescues endangered persons; administers first aid; operates and maintains fire trucks, rescue units, and other apparatus and equipment; operates resuscitators; serves as dispatcher; assists in maintenance and repairs to fire depart-. ment apparatus; inspects commercial and residential structures to in- sure com;liance with federal, state, and local fire prevention laws and regulations; maintains fire station and grounds; attends drills and classes'; studies technical periodicals and publications; studies local conditions, locations and regulations; may act in place of engineer on assigned shift. Training and Experience Graduation from high school or G.E. D. Certificate. Firefighter To qualify for the position of firefighter, no experience as a • firefighter is necessary; after appointment, an employee should be willing to attend college level classes in Fire Science on his/her own time. Certified Firefighter To be eligible for the position of Certified Firefighter an individual must have successfully completed an approved basic fire science academy certified by the State of California Board of Fire Services. Experienced Firefighter To be eligible for the position of Experienced Firefighter an individual must have successfully completed two years of paid experience as a firefighter in a government fire department (city -county -special fire district) located in California. Knowledge and Abilities Good knowledge of arithmetic, some knowledge of principles of mechanics, elementary chemistry and elementary physics is desirable. ATTACHMENT A 0 v CITY OF WEST COVINA FIREFIGHTER - continued CLASS SPECIFICATION Revised AUGUST 1981 Ability: to read and understand technical materials relating to fire fighting, prevention and departmental regulations; to apply elementary principles of chemistry and physics to fire fighting problems; to understand and follow written and oral directions under stress and pressure; to work effectively under emergency conditions, and to use sould judgment under hazardous circumstances; to work in a team, and independently; to maintain cooperative working relations; to deal effectively and courteously with the public; physical endurance and agility;,to write simple reports. Physical Requirements Age: Minimum 18 years Weight: In proportion to height Vision: 20 20 uncorrected desirable• acceptable condition 20 70 uncorrected in each eye, correctable to 20 each eye.
