Due to fire prevention activities, stricter codes, and better public education, the fire problem in West Covina has steadily decreased over the years, however, the number of medical calls is increasing. By reorganizing the staffing of our units we can provide an extraordinary level of pre -hospital emergency medical care. The proposed reorganization will transfer all paramedics to engine companies and delete the use of paramedic squads. West Covina will be served by five advanced life support units instead of two. Advanced life support measures will begin upon the arrival of the engine company. The proposed system also recommends the implementation of a public/private partnership with a private ambulance company to provide patient transport. agnd07.15 City Council Agenda • • July 15, 1997 IT) PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICES (continued) 1) Fire Department (continued) Paramedic Engine Companies (continued) In order to begin the implementation process, it is recommended that the City Council authorize the Fire Department to: a) Meet and confer with the Firefighters Association for program implementation. b) Begin negotiation with our two ambulance providers, Cole-Shaefer and American Medical Response, to develop a proposal that will be beneficial to the City as well as to the ambulance provider. c) Authorize the Fire Department to reserve four paramedic training slots for the September training class.
