D-1 DATE January 6, 1998 ® PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER nited States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Local Office I West Covina SUMMARY: At the December 18, 1997 Waste Management and Environmental Quality Commissiori'meeting, the Commission voted to recommend that the City Council request USEPA to open a local office in the City of West Covina. At the November 20, 1997 Waste Management and Environmental Quality Commission meeting during the Public Communications, Mr. Royall Brown requested that the Commission place on their December meeting agenda to have the. City Council request USEPA to opens a local office in West Covina for BKK Landfill oversight. Mr. Brown received the idea from a meeting in November with the Metropolitan Water District. The meeting was at the City of Industry Sheraton Hotel regarding Governmental Affairs on the groundwater remediation in the San Gabriel Valley. Per Mr. Brown, the San Gabriel Valley Water Quality Authority introduced the topic of having an EPA local office to better address the groundwater remediation in the San Gabriel Valley. There was also mention that EPA has a local field office in San Diego. Mr. Brown feel's that EPA should also have a local office in West Covina to address the BKK landfill groundwater remediation. It was also suggested the City consider leasing office space for EPA at the City Hall Annex. At the December 18, 1997 Waste Management and Environmental Quality Commission meeting, the Commission voted to recommend that the City Council request USEPA to open a local office in the City of West Covina. 1 Staff currently has no information on'any EPA local field offices. Staff is trying to obtain information available on EPA local offices for Council's review to help with their decision. With additional time and City Council's permission, staff could have additional background information on EPA local field offices to merit a local field office in the City of West Covina by the next council meeting.
