AGENDA
ITEM NO. D-3c
DATE January 16, 2007
SUBJECT: AWARD OF BID FOR FUEL ISLAND CANOPY CONSTRUCTION
(PROJECT NO. BP-04301)
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council take the following actions:
1. Accept the bid of Green Giant Landscape in the amount of $63,000 as submitted at the bid
opening on December 21, 2006, and authorize the Public Works Director/City Engineer and
City Clerk to execute the contract to install a new fuel island canopy at the City Maintenance
Yard.
2. Appropriate $13,000 from Proposition A (Fund 121) to complete all required project work.
DISCUSSION:
This project provides for the installation of a new fuel island canopy at the City Maintenance
Yard as approved by the City Council as part of the 2006-2007 Capital Improvement Program.
Currently, there is no canopy at the site.
Public transit buses are fueled at the existing compressed natural gas station that is currently
exposed to inclement weather causing a "slippery when wet" hazard. This project will provide
for the construction of a new overhead canopy and a lighting system to protect the fuel station's
users during.inclement weather. The new canopy is designed by a State -registered engineer, "CL
Consultants." The project is expected to begin in early January 2007 and be completed by the
end of February 2007.
This project was advertised in the McGraw Hill Company-FW Dodge publication and in the San
Gabriel Valley Tribune on December 8 and 13, 2006. On December 14, 2006, a mandatory job -
walk was held at the project site with three contractors present. On December 21, 2006, two bids
were received and opened by the City Clerk. The lowest responsive bid was received from Green
Giant Landscape of La Habra, California.

ALTERNATIVES:
1., Reject the bids received and re -advertise. Since a favorable bid was received, it is unlikely
that seeking new bids would reduce costs any further.
2. Not to perform this project.

FISCAL IMPACT:
In June 2006, the City Council approved the 2006-2007 Capital Improvement Program that
included $60,000 from Proposition "A" Transit Fund (121.83.8401.7500) for this project. It
should be noted that Proposition "A" funds may only be used for transit -related projects subject
to the approval and review of the County's Transportation Committee. This project has received
that approval.
In addition to the $63,000 for the construction contract, a sum of $10,000 is needed for contract
administration, inspection, and contingencies for a total funding of $73,000 to complete this
project.
