Summary: This project consists of the installation of East/West left -turn
-phasing at each intersection. The estimated cost of this project is
$50,000.
Background:
Each year the City establishes a minor traffic ' signal modification project, normally in the amount of
$50,000.. Over the years this money has been used to replace .controllers and signal cabinets and to
make minor operational improvements at various locations throughout the . City. This year it is
proposed that these funds be used at the intersections of Amar/Nogales and Amar/Median.
Analysis:
Plans and specifications have been prepared for the installation of poles, mast arms, signs and
conductors at Amar/Nogales and at Amar/Median 600'. east of. Azusa and all appurtenant work per
approved plans and specifications.
These two locations selected for installation of turn phasing have had numerous left -turn accidents
over the .last three years.
Alternatives:
The City has the option to perform the task in-house which . requires hiring more full time personnel,
purchasing and/or renting additional equipment and appropriating additional funds on a continuing
basis.
Fiscal Impact:
The estimated construction cost for this project is $45,000 plus $5,000 for final engineering,
inspection, contingencies, etc., for a total estimated project cost of $50,000. The actual cost will be
known when the bids are opened. -
Funds are available in the Project TS-92107 account, as follows:
City of Walnut $7,000.00 •
Participation
Gas Tax 50,000.00
Total $57,000.00
The City of Walnut has a 25 % share of the intersection at Amar and Nogales.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council approve the Plans and Specifications for City Project TS-
92107 and authorize the City Engineer to call for bids..
