02-01-1994 - Veterans Memorial Status ReportTo City Council and City Manager FROM Human Services Department SUBJECT: VETERANS MEMORIAL STATUS REPORT AGEND.Al, ITEM NO. DATE Summary: The following is a status report on the progress of the proposed Veterans Memorial. BACKGROUND For the past two years, the Veterans Memorial Committee has continued their work to finalize the design of the proposed memorial in the Civic Center Complex. The Committee has worked with a local landscape architect, Tom Segura, to arrive at a solution acceptable to all concerned. The latest re -design incorporates the features requested by the City Council and increases both the site layout and size of the memorial. (See attached sketches) NEW CONCEPT A new concept that is being considered by the Committee calls for the memorial to alsoincorporate the requirements for an outdoor stage. A multi -use facility would seem to be beneficial to the community and might help make the project more attractive to donors. It is intended to address the need for a bandshell in the community while providing a worthy memorial to veterans of all wars. STATUS The Committee will present the concept to the Human Services Commission on February 8, 1994, to receive their comments and recommendation on the new multi -use memorial. Staff will prepare a Council report with the Commission's recommendation and bring it to the Council in late February or early March, 1994. RECOMMENDATION . That the City Council receive and file this report. Gul Salazar Human Services Director veutatuxC/ ic ft V VETERANS MEMORIAL.
