SAFETY VESTS
SUMMARY:
The West Covina Fire Department request Council, approval to purchase new personal body
armor for firefighters, whose current armor exceeds ;the manufacturer's five (5) year ballistic,
performance warranty.
BACKGROUND:
The -Fire Department issued personal body armor to department personnel in. 1993. The
manufacturer of the vests that were issued warranted their ballistic resistance for a. five (5) year
period. These vests had already exceeded that when they were issued. The Police Department.
gave the vests to the Fire Department when they were issued new ones.
The body armor - issued to the firefighters in .1993 has fat exceeded the manufacturers
recommended fire (5) year period and is currently in need of replacement. At the current time 80
personnel are in need of replacement vests.
Three vendors were solicited by the Fire Department to participate in the replacement. process.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The Fire Department currently needs to purchase 82 vests at a cost of $560.00 each. The total
cost of the purchase is $49,708.40.
Funding for .the vest replacement was requested and approved in the 2000/2001 CIP budget.
$57,000 was approved, however, the low bid was only $49,708.40.. Funds will come from
account #110-320-3113-7155.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council approve the purchase of 82 personal armor vests from.
Aardvark Tactical Supply at a cost not to exceed $49,708.40.
