Meeting was called to order by Commissioner Duncan at 3:05 p.m,
I. ROLL CALL - Commissioners Present: Duncan, Markowitz, Newlin, Taylor
(arrived at 3:40 p.m.)

APPROVALS OF MINUTES. - Minutes of the regular meeting on December 9,
1999, were approved as submitted.

IV. PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS NON -AGENDA ITEMS —None
V. OLD BUSINESS
A. Senior Meals Program Update
Pat Bommarito provided update of Senior Meals Program. The Ad hoc
committee will be meeting on Monday January 17. The committee has
reviewed a draft Request for Proposal (RFP) for contract catering services.
Director Hatch is meeting.with Mike Earley of the County to review the
proposed changes'and questions from the committee. Interviews for, the cook
position will be conducted this week. Survey of lunch meals is out at the
Senior Center._
VI. NEW BUSINESS
A., Use of Cortez House
Bommarito provided background on the Cortez House. After a public hearing
with the area residents and the Community .Services Commission it was agreed
that the site should be used as. a passive site. A subcommittee of two
Community Services Commissioners. and two Senior Citizens Commissioners
is being established to jointly explore ideas for the site. Discussion continued
regarding proposed ideas from the prior reviews of the site. Commissioners'
Newlin- and Markowitz volunteered to sit on the joint subcommittee.
- B. Election of Senior Community Volunteer of the Year
The Commission reviewed the nominees for Senior Vol
unteer:• 'Nominees are
Elsie Redline, Kathleen Miller,.Betty Jacks, and Steve & Ardythe. Motion by
Duncan and seconded by Markowitz to nominate Elsie Redline and Senior.
Community Services Volunteer of the Year. Motion carried 4-0
C. Nominations for.Outstanding Older American
Lea Kolnick presented information on an older American volunteer at the
Senior Center and submitted her name as a nominee., Commissioners were
encouraged to submit names at the next meeting
D. Senior Center Parking Lot Construction
Parking lot construction is beginning at the Senior Center and will include_
resurfacing, restriping, fixing sidewalks and"removing trees. The front
entrance to the center will also. be closed in. Lea requested the Commissions
assistance in communicating the work, with'the seniors.
VIL SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS —
Transportation — Markowitz, Taylor — No recent transportation meeting.
Homebound/Frail Seniors - Newlin, Pahner = No discussion held. ,
Active Senior/Community Activities = Duncan, Taylor —.Meeting for January 18
rescheduled to January 25 at the Senior Center.
Support Group -Duncan, Newlin — Group discussed the SNAC committee.
VIII. STAFF REPORTS -
Lea Kolnick presented information on the YWCA of San Gabriel. Valley's Year
2000 . Women of Achievement nominations.
Lea distributed a brochure about a video which describes some of the senior
services available in Los Angeles County called "A Brighter Tomorrow for
Seniors." The Commission currently is not interested in the video.
Lea is working with the Chamber of Commerce regarding partnering with the
Senior Center to hold a "handyman" fair. *,The Chamber will provide a brochure
with various contractors, whose licensing and bonds have been checked. Fair is
projected for May.
Lea is continuing to search for vendor contributions for computers.
The Center held many multi cultural events during the month of December. All
were successful. Many volunteers helped out on the Christmas Day Brunch.
Upcoming Senior Center events include Chinese New Year's Event on February 4
and Valentine's Sweetheart Lunch on February 14.
Pat Bommarito'stated that.staff has two Requests for Proposals (RFP) out. City
Council will award bid for consultant for 5-year Consolidated Plan on January 18.
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) public service hearings will; begin
in February
Transportation contract will be going out: Still looking to ex_pand to south end of
the City. City is proposing to bring Dial -a -Ride and Shuttle services into one
contract.
Lucy Garcia provided background on Prop 12. Will be requesting Commissions
position on the proposition at the next meeting. More information may be
obtained on the Internet at www. safeparks. org.
IX. COMMISSIONER REPORTS -
Volunteer Nominations = None received. .
'Commissioner Markowitz commented on the recent closure of Trader Joe's.
X. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 4:00 p:m. to the next regular Senior.
