Meeting was called to order by 'Commissioner Palmer at 3:05 p.m.
I. ROLL CALL - Commissioners Present: Duncan, Newlin, Pahner, Taylor
(arrived at 4:35 p.m.), Watts
Absent: Deniston, Markowitz
Staff Present: Bommarito, Janacua, Kline, Martinez, Rush
II. APPROVALS OF MINUTES - Minutes of December 10, 1998, were approved
as presented.
III. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS - Commissioner Pahner shared a note from
former Commissioner Fred Gratz.
IV. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None
V. SPECIAL ITEMS -
Guest Speaker - Dr. Jun flee Kim, MSW.PhD., of the Adult & Senior Health Care
Resource Center in West Covina.
Dr. Kim gave an overview of the Adult & Senior Health Care Center in West
Covina. ,Presentation included types of tong -Term Care, Adult Day Services and
Services and Programs of the Adult Day Health Care Center.
Adult day care is fast becoming a popular alternative to nursing homes. Adult
health care (medical and social services) is covered by Medical. The average
participant age of daily care is 75 years old. The Center is open Monday through
Friday from 8:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. Participants can choose morning and/or
afternoon sessions and meals can be orders.
Discussion and questions/answers followed after Dr. Kim's presentation.
VI. ACTION ITEMS -
Pat Bommarito requested Commissioners to select an outstanding senior volunteer
of the year. Nominations were as follows:

Elsie Redline
Dolores Kowalski
Geneva Nixon
Loretta F'elle'r
Dick Deniston
Kathleen Miller
Fred Gratz
Commissioners selected Loretta Feller and Fred Gratz as co -winners for the Senior
"Volunteer of the Year." Presentations will be in February 1999.
VII. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS
Transnortation - Markowitz Taylor -Next meeting 1/2 1.
1-lomebound/Frail/Senior - Newlin, Palmer -- .Ian. 12. Pahner reported.
Subconunittee met with .leff and Marion. Pahner is Palmer is going to work on
"Vial of l,ile" and take the program out to homebound seniors.
Active Senior — Deniston. Duncan, Watts — January 14 meeting canceled.
Rescheduled for Monday 1/18 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Services conference
room.
Community Activities — Newlin, Pahner, Taor — Discussion regarding the
direction of the. subcommittee. Palmer relayed her recent involvement with the
preparations of the Rose Parade Float.
Support Group — Duncan, Newlin — I st Thurs. of every month.
Duncan inquired about the recent joint meeting between the City Council and
Community Services Commission regarding the proposed gym. Bommarito
recapped the meeting.

VIII. - STAFF REPORTS
Transportation —.Anthony Martinez updated Commission on transportation
,.issues. Anthony presented the new shuttle schedule which is larger and easier to
read. New schedule includes new earlier shuttle hours.
Nutrition Grant — Senior Center received and RFP from AAA for the Nutrition
program. The program will also apply for CDBG funding during February,
INCITE — Jeff reported on INCITE program.
Classes - Senior Center will be having a computer lab in addition to computer
classes.
IX. COMMISSIONER REPORTS
Duncan reported on Citrus Valley Health Cabinet.
Newlin expressed ressed appreciation Dr. Kim's report on Adult Da and I? Pp p y Health Care.
Newlin also suggested that a representative from the Lark Ellen Tower come to a
future meeting.
Watts reported on the Christmas morning breakfast at the Senior Center.
Taylor complimented the Winterfest event. Many vendors were positive and are
looking forward to next year.
X. ADJOURNMENT — The next regular Senior Citizens Commission meeting is on
February l i1, 1999, at 3:00 p.m., Room 314, West Covina City Hall.
