I. ROLL CALL — Commissioners. Present: Deniston, Duncan, Newlin, Palmer,
Taylor, Watts
Absent: Markowitz
Staff Present: Bommarito, Collins, Janacua, Kline, Rush
II. APPROVALS OF MINUTES - Minutes of November 12, 1998, were approved
as presented.
III. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS — None
IV. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None
V. ACTION ITEMS —
A. Election of Officers
Motioned by Watts and seconded by Deniston to re-elect current Chairperson
Palmer and Vice -chair Markowitz. Motioned carried 6-0.
B. 1999 Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority — Call
for Projects
Staff Report
Lucy Janacua presented staff report. The City of West Covina is seeking
"funding" to offset the cost of the West Covina Shuttle Expansion.
Watts commented that most south end residents do feel there is not enough, if
any, public transportation to serve them.
Newlin inquired about the number of buses the expansion would utilize.
Deniston asked if the funding was on going or this was a one-time opportunity.
Lucy explained that the funding was for two years.
Newlin asked about the expansion boundaries.
Recommendation
Motioned by Taylor and seconded by Watts to recommend that City
Council approve and direct staff to apply for 1999 MTA Call for Projects.
Motion carried 6-0.
C. AAA Senior Nutrition Grant
Jeff Kline presented staff report outlining AAA Senior Nutrition Grant.
Discussion
Watts asked the effect the program would have on the current staff. Jeff
explained that the staff and Sysco (food distribution company) would remain
the same.
Newlin expressed the advantages to the employees by going with a catering
company.
Duncan praised the current cook and the reputation of the kitchen staff.
Taylor inquired about a probation period with a new program.
Further discussion regarding the advantages to staff, maintenance, monitoring
with a catered program.
Recommendation
Motioned by Deniston and seconded by Taylor to approve the filing of a
four-year nutrition grant with the Area Agency on Aging. Motion carried
6-0.
VI. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS
Transportation — Markowitz, TMlor — No .meeting.
Homebound/Frail/Senior — Newlin, Pahner — No meeting.
Active Senior — Deniston, Duncan, Watts — Dec. 2
Deniston presented report. Discussion followed regarding volunteers and
programs available.
Community Activities — Newlin, Pahner, Tam — No meeting.
Support Group — Duncan, Newlin — 0 Thurs. of every month
Newlin stated group discussed the AAA grant.
VIL STAFF REPORTS
Cindy announced Pat Bommarito as acting Community Services Director during
her maternity leave. Cindy reminded Commissioners of the upcoming Winterfest
on December 12, 1998. Cindy also thanked the Commissioners for the past year.
VIII. COMMISSIONER REPORTS
Newlin reported on her visit to the San Gabriel Valley Adult Day Care Health
Center.
Duncan spoke on the support group.
Deniston asked that if anyone had any suggestion or ideas for the Voice, to please
let her know.
X. ADJOURNMENT — The next regular Senior Citizens Commission meeting is on
January 14,� 1999, at 3:00 p.m., Room 314, West Covina City Hall.
