Subject: 75`h Anniversary Celebration Committee's Application for the 1999
Tournament of Roses Parade
SUMMARY
Over one hundred and forty West Covina residents attended the 751h
Anniversary Committee Planning Party that was held this past October. At this
meeting, nine subcommittees were formed to focus their efforts on highlighting a
specific aspect of life in the city. A major portion of the meeting was devoted to
the generation of ideas for possible events that could be held for the purpose of
celebrating the 75th.Anniversary. By far, the most popular idea to emerge was
that of seeking an invitation to .participate in the 1999 Tournament of Roses
Parade.
Because an Executive Board for the Celebration Committees had yet to be
formed, Staff took the initiative to investigate the requisites of application
process, as well as other concerns, i.e., float builders, float costs, etc. Further,
as it is recommended that applications be received in the January previous to
the desired year of participation, Staff submitted an application package to the
Selection Committee via overnight mail. This package included the application,
as well as a cover letter signed by Mayor Wong.
Notification of approval status is expected by June 1998. Certainly, the
Committee's participation in the Rose Parade is at the discretion of the
Executive Board and, of course, is contingent upon the approval of the
Tournament of Roses Selection Committee.
The first Executive Board meeting is scheduled for February 5. If the Board
approves the project of seeking an invitation to participate in the Rose Parade,
the Committee will begin planning a .fund raising campaign to raise money
necessary to pay for the costs of design and construction of a float. Preliminary
research by Staff indicates that float costs begin at $70,000 and go up from
there. Further, a mechanism will be developed such that donations can' be
accepted and logged. Tracking monies will facilitate the reimbursement process
in the event that the application is not approved.
