AGENDA
ITEM NO. 17
DATE January 21. 2014
Chris Freeland, Deputy City Manager/Community Services Director
SUBJECT: REQUEST FROM COUNCILMEMBER COREY WARSHAW REQUESTING
THE CITY COUNCIL TO INSTRUCT CITY STAFF TO PREPARE A
REPORT ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF A VETERANS' MEMORIAL
WALL UTILIZING PUBLIC ART FUNDS
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council direct staff accordingly.
DISCUSSION:
Per the City Council Standing Rules, Councilmember Corey Warshaw is seeking the City Council's
consensus to instruct City staff to prepare a report on the construction of a Veterans' Memorial Wall
possibly utilizing Public Art Funds.
In 2010, the City of West Covina approved the construction of a Veterans' Memorial Wall at the
Civic Center based on a design developed by volunteers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Since that time, volunteers have raised $11,222 for the Veterans' Memorial Wall. Attached is a
copy of the preliminary design and proposed location in the Civic Center Courtyard (Attaclunent
No. 1). According to Public Works, the Veteran's Memorial is estimated to cost between $50,000-
$200,000, depending on the final design and materials used (i.e. stucco, concrete, granite, etc.).
FISCAL IMPACT:
Any fiscal impact will be dependent on direction taken by the City Council.
