AGENDA
ITEM NO. I -I
DATE January 20, 2009
SUBJECT: REQUEST FROM MAYOR ROGER HERNANDEZ REQUESTING THE
CITY COUNCIL CONSIDER CALLING A SPECIAL ELECTION IN
ANTICIPATION OF RECEIVING A PETITION TO FORM CITY COUNCIL
DISTRICTS THAT WILL COINCIDE WITH THE EXPECTED 32ND
CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT SPECIAL ELECTION
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council direct staff accordingly. -
DISCUSSION:
Per the City Council Standing Rules, Mayor Roger Hernandez is seeking the City Council's
consensus to instruct staff to prepare a staff report calling for a special election in anticipation of
receiving a petition to form City Council districts. Mayor Hernandez is requesting that the special
election coincide with the special election to fill the expected vacancy in the 32°a Congressional
Seat of Congresswoman Hilda Solis.
At the time of this report, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has yet to call for a special election to
fill Congresswoman Hilda Solis' seat, so no election date has been identified. In addition, the City
has not received a petition calling for a special election to form City Council districts.

Any fiscal impact will be dependent on direction taken by the City Council.
