SUMMARY: There is currently one vacancy in the Community Services Commission
due to a resignation. Staff is requesting direction on filling the vacancy.
DISCUSSION
Donald Grant resigned from the Community Services Commission effective December
31, 1997. His position expires June 30, 1998. This vacancy has been posted in
conformance with state law, so the City Council may fill the vacancy after January 1�9th
The vacancy was posted since December 30, 1997 for the required 20 days.
As part of the Commissioner selection process to fill expiring terms in June 1997, there
were four candidates who expressed interest in the Community Services Commission and
were not appointed. These candidates are Jeannette Duvall -Ward, Darrel Higuchi,
Winnie Lewis, and Helen Redondo. Councilmember Howard and Mayor Pro Tem.
Melendez were on� the interview subcommittee for this Commission.
Staff is requesting direction on filling this vacancy. There are several options available to
the City Council to fill this vacancy.
1. Leave the position vacant and fill the vacancy during the June,- 1998 appointment
process. Since this position expires June 1998, the Council may choose to leave this
position vacant until that time.
2. Reactivate the` interview subcommittee; interview the four applicants and any new
candidates resulting from the posting. As of January 12, 1998, no new candidates
have submitted applications.
3. Initiate a new process, advertise for additional candidates and reactivate the interview
subcommittee to interview the candidates:
Staff has not contacted the four existing candidates to determine their interest. Staff
requests direction ,from the City Council on how to proceed with filling this vacancy.

staff.
