I year, the County of Los Angeles recognizes a single representative
s senior population to commemorate Older Americans Recognition
aty recognizes the contributions of the senior population at the Older
ition Day luncheon. This year's luncheon will be held on May 21.
For the past several years, staff has requested Councilmembers to consider nominations
and has also suggested a candidate for the Council to consider. This year, the. absolute
deadline for submission of the City's honoree is March 10. The City Council meeting of
February 18 will be the only meeting with regular business prior to that date. We are thus
faced with the need to act at this meeting.
Fortunately, staff is recommending a very worthy candidate, Sally Deniston. Ms.
Deniston has served as a member of the Senior Citizens Commission for four years and is
currently serving as Chair of the Commission. Following a 25-year career in the financial
services industry, she began a second career of volunteerism: She has dedicated her
talents to the American Red Cross, and serves on that agency's board of directors. She is
Treasurer of the Five Acres Children's Guild. She serves the West Covina Senior Center
as Volunteer Coordinator. She is an Assemblymember-elect of the California Senior
Legislature.
Should the City Council concur with staffs recommendation, Ms. Deniston will be
honored at a luncheon with a number of honorees county -wide on May 21. It is
customary for a member of the City Council to accompany the City's honoree to this
event.
RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council nominate Sally
Deniston to be recognized as West Covina's honoree for the Older Americans
Recognition Day.
