SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION APPOINTMENTS AGENDA ITEM NO. 0-1 DATE January 19, 1993 SUMMARY: The City Council appointed a sub -committee of Mayor Pro Tem Jennings and Councilmember Wong to interview and recommend appointments for two vacancies due to resignations on the Senior Citizen Commission. This report. summarizes the interview process and recommends appointment of the two commissioners and term expiration dates on the two positions. BACKGROUND• The. Senior Citizen Commission was expanded from five to seven members on September 23, 1991.. The Commission is now composed of seven appointed positions serving staggered two )year terms. The Commission is currently staffed as follows:. Commissioner Glen Buckingham Ken Fridley Fred Gratz Dolores Kowalski Winnie Lewis Vacant Seat`(Gilbert) Vacant Seat (Smythe) Term Expires June 1993 June 1993 June 1994 June 1994 June 1994 June 1993 June 1994 DESIGNATION OF TERMS TO BE APPOINTED: As required under the West Covina Municipal Code, Section 2-135 (vacancies), the City Council shall appoint a replacement for the two 'commissioners who resigned. The terms of the two new commissioners shall be governed by the unexpired term of the commissioner they replaced. The unexpired terms are: - term of Louis Gilbert (6/30/93) - term of Barbara Smythe (6/30/94) INTERVIEW PROCESS: The sub -committee screened applications on file for this commission, and conducted interviews with four candidates for the vacancies. The commissioner candidate pool possessed excellent qualifications and the sub -committee found it difficult to make a selection. However, as a result of the interview process, the sub- committee selected two candidates which are believed to be the best qualified to assume the duties and responsibilities of a Senior Citizen Commissioner. Council has the option to approve these candidates or make substitute recommendations. Listed below are the sub -committee's recommended candidates for the two positions: Sally Deniston David G. Duncan RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council: 1) Appoint Sally Deniston to the Senior Citizen Commission with a terming expiring June 30, 1993; 2) Appoint David G. Duncan to the Senior Citizen Commission with a term expiring June 30, 1994. Attachment RESOLUTION NO. Y 9l7 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY .COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WEST COVINA, CALIFORNIA, APPOINTING SALLY DENISTON AND DAVID G. DUNCAN TO THE SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION. The City Council of the City of West Covina does resolve as follows: SECTION 1. The City Council does hereby appoint Sally Deniston as a member of the Senior Citizen Commission of the City of West Covina for a term expiring June 30, 1993; and does hereby appoint David G. Duncan as a member of the Senior Citizen Commission of the City of West Covina for a term expiring June 30, 1994; SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution and shall transmit a certified copy thereof to Sally Deniston and David G. Duncan. Approved and adopted this 19th day of January, 1993.
