SUMMARY OF ACTIONS
SENIOR CITIZENS COMMISSION
MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF
February 24, 2011
I. CALL TO ORDER - Chair Hughes called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
II. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE / MOMENT OF SILENT MEDITATION
Commissioner Taylor led the Pledge of Allegiance and a Moment of Silent Meditation.
III. ROLL CALL - Commissioners present: Glenn, Hughes, Mason, Perryman and Taylor
Staff present: Smilowitz, Reynosa and Headley
IV. CORRESPONDENCE AND ORAL COMMUNICATION
Resident Royall Brown spoke of the Senior Center microphone / PA System not working properly by being too loud and making it hard to hear announcements or entertainers, and that bicycle
racks are needed for those who ride their bikes to the Center. Supervisor Reynosa stated that he would turn the PA System down, and that staff would look into the prospect of bicycle
racks.
V. MINUTES FOR APPROVAL - Thursday, December 9, 2010
MOTION:
Motion by Taylor, and seconded by Mason to approve the minutes of the Regular Senior Citizens Commission meeting held on Thursday, December 9, 2010. Motion carried by a vote of 5-0.
VI. PRESENTATIONS - Volunteers of the Year Awards
Chair Hughes presented the two Volunteers of the Year Awards to Ruth Weir and Manuel Lucio. The awards consisted of wooden plaques and two restaurant gift certificates. A suggestion
was offered that staff submit an article in the Tribune about the Volunteers of the Year.
ADMINISTRATION - City Council Staff Reports - None.
OLD BUSINESS - Further Review of Commissioner’s Responsibilities - Priority #2, Active Senior Programs
( Discover Article Requesting/Receiving Voice Newsletter - Supervisor Reynosa stated that the Newsletter would appear in the March Discover.
( Survey on Preferred Methods of Marketing - Supervisor Reynosa stated that the Survey proved that the Voice Newsletter was the ideal method of communication.
( Subscription to Tribune for the Senior Center - Supervisor Reynosa stated that it would be better for seniors to look up the newspaper on the internet, rather than having one newspaper
that would get displaced fairly easily. Suggestions were made to ask the Tribune for 10 free extra copies. Supervisor Reynosa said he would look into it.
( Access Transit Complaints – Contact Access Representative - It was suggested that if a senior has any complaints or comments, let staff know and they will contact the representative
from Access to handle it.
IX. NEW BUSINESS - Update on 2011 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count – Manager Smilowitz gave a report of the success of the Homeless Count, stating that West Covina found 63 homeless
people.
Avoiding Claims of Gift of Public Funds - No comment.
X. INFORMATION - City Events - Upcoming / Ongoing Events No comment.
XI. AD HOC REPORTS - None.
XII. COMMISSIONER REPORTS/COMMENTS - Individual Reports/Comments on Activities - Commissioners spoke of events they attended, and events that are forthcoming.
Discussion on Future Agenda Topics/Interests - None.
XIII. ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Taylor, and seconded by Perryman, to adjourn the meeting at 3:35. Motion carried by a vote of 5-0.
