02-15-2011 - Placement of the Citys Initials on a West Covina - Item 12 (2).doc City of West Covina Memorandum A G E N D A ITEM NO. 12 DATE February 15, 2011 TO: Andrew G. Pasmant, City Manager and City Council FROM: Chris Freeland, Deputy City Manager SUBJECT: PLACEMENT OF THE CITY’S INITIALS ON A WEST COVINA HILLSIDE RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council approve the concept of the construction of “WC” on a hillside in West Covina and the formation of a volunteer committee responsible for finding a location and necessary funding for the project. DISCUSSION: At the February 1, 2011, City Council meeting, the City Council approved Mayor Steve Herfert request to agendize a report on the formation of a volunteer committee to locate and construct a symbolic WC hillside logo. The committee would not use city funds, but construct and maintain the site by soliciting donations from the community. This project is to be in conjunction with the City’s 88th birthday celebration. In communities throughout Southern California, cities have placed their city’s initials on hillsides or mountain ranges visible for miles around the community. Some of the cities locally include Azusa, Duarte, Monrovia, and Cal Poly Pomona. Once the committee identifies a possible location, associated costs, and sponsorships to offset the costs, City staff will bring the proposal back to the City Council for approval. FISCAL IMPACT: The proposal does not include the use of city funds. The committee would be responsible for soliciting donations to construct and maintain the “WC” hillside project.
