Pasmant, City Manager and City Council FROM: Chris Freeland, Deputy City Manager SUBJECT: RATIFICATION OF WALK OF FAME COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS RECOMMENDATION: R It is recommended that the City Council ratify the appointments made by the Mayor to the Walk of Fame Committee as contained within this report. DISCUSSION: In 2008, the City Council created the West Covina “Walk of Fame” at the Big League Dreams Sportsplex that features the names of West Covina athletes, coaches, and volunteers that have contributed to making West Covina a better place to live, work, and play. Honorees must have exhibited high ethical standards in their respective athletic fields and in the community. In addition, the City Council also approved the creation of the Walk of Fame Committee (seven-member committee) made up of individuals that serve a three (3) year appointment and include: Two City Council Members; City Manager or his designee; Representative of West Covina Sports League; Representative from Big League Dreams; At-Large member appointed by the City Council; and a member of City staff. The Walk of Fame Committee evaluates and selects the honorees to be honored each fall. The 2012 Walk of Fame Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 10, at 10:00 a.m. The following are Mayor Michael Touhey’s recommendations to the Walk of Fame Committee: Two City Council Members – Council Members Steve Herfert and Mayor Michael Touhey (Trustee of the Castucci Foundation) City Manager or His/Her Designee – City Manager Andrew Pasmant Representative of West Covina Sports League - Dave Bletcher1 Representative from Big League Dreams – General Manager Chris Simonson At-Large Member Appointed By the City Council – Glenn Kennedy2 Member of City Staff – Deputy City Manager Chris Freeland 1 Dave Bletcher has been a resident of West Covina since 1965 and graduated from West Covina High School in 1971. In 1974, Dave began serving the community as a baseball coach with the West Covina American Little League. Over the years, he volunteered with numerous West Covina Leagues as a coach or manager, including: West Covina Pony; Diamond Winter Baseball League; Mickey Mantle League; Sandy Koufax League (World Champions in 1992); Babe Ruth League; Orangewood Pony; and Connie Mack Express. He has served on the Walk of Fame Committee since 2008. 2 Glenn Kennedy has been a resident of West Covina since 1962 and is a graduate of Edgewood High School. At Edgewood, Glenn played football, wrestling, and track. His volunteerism includes: Coach of West Covina National Little League for over 10 years and Board Member of West Covina Little League for the past four (Vice President 2012).
